작품설명 이 부지는 울산에서 한옥마을이 생기는 산전리에 자리 잡은 곳으로 남쪽으로 간헐재가 보이는 경사가 있는 대지이다. 이 주택을 설계 할 때도 늘 나의 화두가 되었던 “한국적인 공간의 재해석”이라는 부분이 주제였는데 공사도중에 이 대지 앞쪽에 전통적인 한옥마을이 생긴다는 아이러니가 벌어졌다. 추후에 사람들이 한옥을 한국적인 공간이라고 할지 현대적으로 해석된 이 주택이 한국적인 공간이라고 이야기 할지는 알 수가 없다. 다만 내가 희망하는 것은 이 주택을 통하여 계속해서 실험하고 연구하고 있는 나의 화두가 사람들에게 우리의 삶을 가치 있게 할 수 있는 공간이 될 수 있다는 가능성을 보여 주는 것이다.

남서쪽에서 북동쪽으로 6m이상의 고저차가 있으며 남쪽에서 북쪽으로는 계단식으로 조성된 전원주택 단지가 형성될 예정인 부지이다. 건축주는 처음에는 이 부지를 성토해서 그 곳에 주택을 짓고자 하였다. 그러다 보니 토목공사 비용이 많이 나올 것으로 예상 되었고 이는 건축공사비의 예산이 너무도 부족한 결과로 이어졌다. 적은 예산 속에서 조그마한 해결책으로 도산 서원과 향단처럼 경사를 활용한 선조들의 방법을 건축주에게 제안하여 토목 공사비를 최소화 하고 본질적인 건축물에 투자하는 것으로 방향을 잡았다.
낮은 남서쪽에서부터 높은 곳으로 점차 계단식으로 높이를 활용하여 부지의 높이와 건축물의 기단부 그리고 내부 공간에서 높이의 변화를 주고자 하였다. 이러한 높이의 변화는 외부에서 시작하여 내부로 그리고 다시 외부로 연결되고 이 과정 속에서 내부에서는 외부의 변화를 외부에서는 내부의 변화를 서로 인식하고 관계를 형성한다. 이러한 높이의 변화를 순환하면서 형성되어진 중정이 건축물의 중앙에 생겼고, 이는 외부를 중심으로 공간의 수직적 변화가 다방면에서 교차되어지는 공간이 되었다. 내부에서 부지 높이가 가장 높은 북동쪽에서 계속해서 서쪽으로 높이가 높아진 결과 남서쪽의 낮은 부지와 높이 차이가 생겨서 서쪽의 떠 있는 매스를 형성하게 되었다. 이는 중정에서 서쪽으로 나있는 근경의 자연 풍경을 중정으로 끌어 들이는 역할을 한다.
동쪽 도로 쪽으로는 추후 주택단지가 형성될 것이고 서쪽 도로 쪽으로는 자연이 있고 도로 높이도 낮아서 이렇게 떠 있는 매스를 만들어 하부에서 중정과 외부공간이 서로 연계되게 하였으며 이와 동시에 외부공간을 확장시키고자 하였다. 중정에서 누마루와 높이차를 두어 각각의 공간에서 느끼는 공간감을 서로 다르게 하였고, 내부의 연결 복도, 거실, 주방, 누마루 방에서도 각각 다른 높이에서 공간을 느낄 수 있도록 하였다. 안방에서 하늘마당까지 연결되는 동선 또한 높이를 다르게 하여 중정과 누마루에서 바라보는 시각의 소점을 다르게 하였다.
안방은 정남향과 서쪽 대지 경계선 라인이 비슷하여 정남향으로 열린 공간을 설정하고 이를 통하여 대청마루에서 건축주가 바라보고 싶은 동쪽과 남쪽으로 개방된 공간을 확보하였다. 연속성을 가진 외부공간은 이 주택에서 높이의 정점 공간인 전망대 역할을 하는 하늘마당으로 연결 된다. 이 과 정속에서 외부 연결 다리는 높이를 낮게 하여 누마루와 누마루 방에서 남쪽의 수려한 원경을 조망 할 수 있게 하여 주변의 훌륭한 자연경관을 이 건축물 안으로 끌어 들이고자 하였다.

좋은 주택이란 사람에게 생각하는 공간을 많이 만들어 주는 것이라고 생각한다. 이 주택의 긴 동선 속에서 만들어진 다양한 생각의 공간이 건축주에게 깊은 사색과 풍요를 가져다주기를 희망한다.

This site is located on a sloped in Sanjeon-ri, Ulsan, where you can see Ganhuljae to the south, and where the development plan for Hanok village is decided. By the time I was designing this building, I was focusing on the subject "Reinterpretation of Korean space". Ironically, development plan for Korean traditional Hanok village was scheduled during the construction. I don’t know whether people will talk over this building or Hanok as a Korean space. This is not a matter of right or wrong. In fact, I hope to show the potential of the space through my experiments and researches to give more values to human life.

There is 6m level difference from southwest to northeast and a terrace type housing complex construction is scheduled to be laid from south to north.
At first, Client wanted to fill the land and build a house. As in result, budget was assumed to be over estimation due to the earthwork. In the limited budget, I proposed traditional way of using slope like Dosanseowon and Hyangdan just as our ancesters did, minimized budget for earthwork and focused on building itself.
I wanted to propose a method using height variations of the land, stylobate, and inner space from lower southwest level to higher level like stairs.
This variation in level starts from the outside, and links to the inside and outside again creating recognition and correlation between inside and outside throughout the process.
By the process of the height variation, a courtyard was created in the center of the building, and became an intersecting space from various ways by vertical variation pivoting on the outside.
From the northeast area that has highest level inside the building resulted forming a floating mass in the west due to the growing level toward the west. This plays a role of bringing nature context which lays toward the west into the courtyard.
Housing complex is planned towards the land set in the east where there is a Road and the nature lays towards the west where the level of the road is low. By creating floating mass, relationship between courtyard and outside is defined and at the same time, outdoor area is expanded.
The main bedroom was opened to south since the boundary of west and south are about to be same. This allows creating open space towards south and east where client wanted a view. Outside with continuity is connected to sky-yard, the highest space in the building which plays a role of an observatory. In this process, bridge connected to outside is lowered so client can enjoy a view to the south from the loft and it eventually brings in the nature context into the building.

I believe a good housing create space for people to think. Various spaces and various thoughts created in the long circulation hopefully bring reflective thoughts and fertility to the client.
